Description:   The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The School of Natural Sciences at the University of California, Merced invites applications from exceptional scholars and teachers at the Assistant Professor (tenure track) level in Population Genetics/Genomics. We particularly invite applications from active researchers who work on non-model organisms with, or interested in developing, a field research component that complements and advances theoretical and/or applied aspects of conservation biology. We welcome applications from researchers working on animals and/or plants in any realm (terrestrial, aquatic, and/or marine).

Applicants must be able to teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and teach and mentor students of a diverse student population. Potential courses that could be taught by the successful applicant include evolution, population genetics, ecological genomics, conservation biology, and related topics.

UC Merced is ideally located for research in the environmental sciences, with close proximity to a diversity of natural and managed environments from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific Ocean. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the Sierra Nevada Research Institute, a research unit at UC Merced focusing on interdisciplinary environmental studies, and in partnerships with Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks. UC Merced offers access to the UC Natural Reserve System and opportunities for collaboration with other UC campuses and UC-affiliated laboratories.

Qualifications:   Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or other relevant field, a strong publication record, and demonstrated potential to develop an independent, innovative, externally funded research program.

Evaluation criteria to be used by search committee: (1) Quality, importance, and impact of past and current research in an area or areas of Population Genetics/Genomics as judged by publications, awards, and letters of recommendation. (2) Likely importance and potential impact of future research as judged by research plan and letters of recommendation. (3) Research interests that complement and strengthen those of current faculty. (4) Potential for mentoring graduate and/or post-graduate students and to contribute to graduate education and training, particularly of minorities underrepresented in environmental and STEM fields. (5) Potential for effectiveness as an educator at both undergraduate and graduate levels based on teaching statement, experience, and teaching evaluations (as available). (6) Potential ability to work constructively across disciplines within the University to support strong research and educational programs.
 
Salary:   Negotiable, based on the University of California academic pay scale.
