Description:   The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The UC Merced library serves the campus community of more than 5,600 students and 250 faculty with resources and services to support the teaching, research, and public service mission of this vibrant and growing university .

The goal of the Digital Communications librarian is to provide a highly usable, relevant, and innovative digital presence in order to effectively connect library users with available library resources and services.

• Develops a well coordinated digital communications strategy that is valuable to users and feasible to implement, maintain, and evaluate
• Creates online services which are engaging and accessible for users through evaluating, selecting, and implementing effective technology based solutions
• Leads the development, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the library’s digital presence including its web presence, mobile site, social networking profiles, digital signage, and electronic communications
• Leads the library web team to direct website development through gathering input, identifying issues, and pursuing initiatives
• Contributes design, programming, and information architecture expertise to digital and online projects
• Develops workflows and implements tools to simplify the production and distribution of content through digital means
• Coordinates and equips library colleagues and campus staff to produce and obtain content for library communications
• Evaluates the digital signage program and integrates into a larger digital communications strategy
• Develops and interprets metrics in order to evaluate digital communications and services
• Monitors trends in user behavior and emerging technologies, including social media activities
• Participates in library reference services, particularly digital modes of reference

Qualifications:   Required:
• Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
• Strong communication and marketing skills, especially writing and graphic design for online environments and for different audiences. Ability to translate library services and resources as valued, relevant solutions for student and faculty users.
• Expertise in gathering, assessing, analyzing, and applying user feedback and analytics data to create a cohesive, successful, user-oriented experience across multiple platforms and environments, including mobile.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and implement technology solutions in order to meet user needs
• Technical fluency with web authoring standards, accessibility standards, and content management systems that enables successful evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies.
• Expertise using and evaluating current and emerging social media platforms
• Proficiency in project management with a track record of delivering projects on time and within scope.
• Excellent organizational abilities with strong skills in producing workflows that reduce complexity and redundancy
• Experience in supervising and training others, especially students.
• Demonstrated creativity and flexibility.
• Ability to attend to details and strategize (“think big”)
• Strong collaborative & interpersonal skills

• Experience using media production technology, including Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut
• Experience using digital signage software; experience implementing innovative & interactive digital experiences in physical environments
• Experience with project management software
• Experience working in an academic environment with both students and faculty
• Experience providing reference, especially digital reference
Salary:   $50,892.00 - $58,188.00
