(09-0037) CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST I MAY 11, 2009

One or more intermittent hourly, temporary (renewable) position(s) in Student Health Service (SHS). The Student Health Service is an outpatient primary care clinic, staffed by four physicians, eight mid-level practitioners which provide medical care to students enrolled in the University in accordance with policies set by the Board of Trustees of the California State University. Services available include the treatment of acute conditions, injuries, illnesses, and a family planning program. An in-house licensed pharmacy, federally certified high complexity laboratory, and x-ray department complement the services available to students. POSITION: The Clinical Laboratory Scientist, under general supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, will perform all procedures necessary to run a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests; perform chemical, microscopic, microbiological, hematological and other laboratory diagnostic tests; perform pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing; perform mathematical calculations related to testing and analysis; perform chemical and physical tests to identify the composition of a patient’s blood, tissues and various bodily fluids; perform cultures; process blood samples and perform various counts and tests; maintain and operate instruments and equipment utilizing established procedures; conduct routine calibration and/or standardization of instruments; formulate/prepare/produce certain solutions, reagents, and media; work in all areas of the laboratory: reception, patient data input, phlebotomy, and resource for nursing and medical staff; work with student observers by explaining the operation of a clinical laboratory; update existing written procedures and develop new procedures to comply with federal and state regulations; and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires incumbents possess the requisite education for licensing, which is a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent post-secondary education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science. In addition, incumbents must possess sufficient experience to demonstrate the professional and technical competencies to independently perform the duties of the position and must have a thorough knowledge of the theories, methods, principles and practices of clinical laboratory science. The use and care of laboratory equipment is required as well as working knowledge of the preparation, mounting, and staining of specimens; serological, bacteriological and other chemical tests; basic knowledge of mycology, virology, and genetics; working knowledge of automated information systems used in clinical laboratory settings; general knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control and assurance procedures, protocols and standards; and general knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the operation of a clinical laboratory. Additional requirements include remaining current on literature in the clinical laboratory field; the ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of this position; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and others; adjust to change (i.e., work environment, technology); work effectively with a diverse population; function cooperatively and productively as a member of a unit; and the demonstrated ability to perform the duties listed herein.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a successful fingerprint clearance and proof of a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license that must be maintained and remain valid during employment.

PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum of five years of clinical laboratory experience; knowledge and experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining a Laboratory Information System (LIS); and computer software skills. Current CPR certificate and ASCP license are also preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position does require working with biohazardous materials and chemicals after appropriate training; moderate noise levels exist at various times in the laboratory; and personal protective clothing required while working (i.e.: laboratory coats, closed toed shoes, safety glasses, latex gloves).

AVAILABLE: ASAP through June 30, 2010 (with possible renewal on a year-to-year basis)

SALARY: $24.91 - $39.87 per hour, with no health benefits.
