Fieldwork Technician (Continuous Recruitment)

Description:  

The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With more than 3,400 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

The University seeks seasonal and part-time field technicians to assist with taking measurements, and installing, monitoring and/or maintaining equipment at various field locations within California and the Western United States. The technician is responsible for working closely with Researchers, Graduate Students and PI’s to obtain and verify environmental measurements; specific duties are based on the projects and research being conducted. Field technicians will perform physical duties in a range of environments, including high elevation alpine areas, and therefore must have an appropriate level of physical fitness, and enjoy being out in the elements. This position is a great learning experience for any individual interested in natural resources, plant ecology and/or climate change.

 
Qualifications:   Specific requirements may be vary by position.

Lab Assistant III
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Laboratory Assistant II
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Laboratory Assistant I
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Laboratory Helper:
Ability to read, write, perform basic mathematical calculations, follow oral and written instructions; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

All levels require:
High level of enthusiasm as well as organizational and communication skills
Able to work independently and as part of a team
Experience with data entry in Excel, field experience a plus
Ability to enjoy long days of repetitive but meaningful work is strongly desired

May also require:
Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical labor, hike in slippery and wet conditions, work in adverse weather, and in creeks with flowing water and or snow. Be an advance skier with backcountry winter and rugged high altitude hiking/travel skills.
