The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With more than 3,400 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.
The Director of Development (DOD) is a key position within the University Relations Department and will be an integral asset to the Departments Development unit. The DOD will be assigned campus wide development projects (scholarship drives, annual fund initiatives, building campaigns, etc.) and will also be assigned to the School of Engineering in order to provide support on specific projects based on funding needs. The DOD will report directly to the Executive Director of Development and the Executive Director of Development will work directly with the Dean. The DOD will both assist and take a leadership role in prospecting, donor cultivation, solicitations and stewardship. The DOD will also provide the Executive Director of Development with consistent and timely updates on all activities and communications related to prospects and donors. In these roles the Director will demonstrate superior skills related to public speaking, speech writing, proposal development, preparing and finalizing ask proposals, generating stewardship communications and representing the campus to a wide range of community constituent groups, the media, legislators and other important stakeholders. The DOD will be responsible for preparing and submitting donor profiles, contact reports and donor/project briefing as needed. As part of the Department team, the DOD will work with the various division units of Special Events, Governmental Relations, University Relations and Public Affairs to both plan and assist in projects and initiatives that advance the university. The DOD will daily utilize the advancement software program and will consistently work to protect the privacy and integrity of the Departments database.

Required:
Essential skills, knowledge and abilities required for performing the duties of this position: A comprehensive knowledge of the Universitys mission, organization, operations, programs, policies and relevant public policy issues; a thorough working knowledge of traditional and contemporary development and advancement strategies; knowledge of and abilities in all aspects of prospecting, cultivation, the ask, and donor stewardship; exemplary oral skills, public speaking abilities, and writing skills; knowledge of CASE standards regarding types of gifts, gift valuations, donor acknowledgements, and gift reporting; demonstrated successful experience organizing campus tours and VIP visits, creating special giving and support clubs, organizing annual funds, developing and implementing funding campaigns, and representing the university to community groups and service organizations; a thorough understanding of different ways to give (pledge, donations, planned giving, etc.), types of gifts (cash, appreciated securities, negotiable instruments, etc.); and a demonstrated record of progressively successful fundraising. A degree in engineering and/or minimum 3-5 years of successful and significant related experience as a development officer, preferably in a university setting.
The incumbent should be actively engaged in engineering associations or businesses and should know relevant players within the industry. Experience in a business development position for an engineering business or corporation preferred.
The incumbent must also have the ability to: supervise staff and manage and monitor budgets; work effectively with diverse constituencies within the institution; coordinate, monitor and successfully complete numerous projects simultaneously; to think clearly, creatively and critically in an environment characterized by ambiguity and crises; analyze complex situations and devise strategies to convey information to others simply and to communicate with clarity and precision in verbal and written form; work successfully as a member of a team as well as independently, often in sensitive, high-pressure situations; maintain a high level of customer service at all times.
Special Conditions of Employment:
Ability to travel to meetings and events required.
