Description:  

The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With more than 5,600 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

A UC Merced Police Officer protects life and property, enforces criminal law, and performs other duties typical of police officers in general law enforcement agencies. Officers patrol the UC Merced Campus sites in Merced, Atwater, and Fresno in patrol cars, on bicycles, alternative modes of transportation, and on foot. The Police Department uses a Community Oriented Policing philosophy and is dedicated to community service.

Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic collisions, and other required emergencies; initiate police action when necessary; prevent and suppress crime; investigate missing persons, and make arrests and search, fingerprint, and transport prisoners; conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents, disturbances, hazardous incidents, vehicle collisions, casualties; enforce federal and state laws, and University regulations; collect and preserve evidence and found property; interrogate suspects and interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; check buildings for physical security; direct traffic and write traffic citations; prepare written and computer-generated reports; work closely with the public and University units to identify and solve community problems; make presentations to citizens and groups; participate in on-going training; prepare cases and testify in court; execute assigned duties pursuant to University and Police policy and procedures.

Provide dignitary protection to identified guests, work at other UC System-wide sites as part of mutual aid requests, participate in/or organize community service events/programs, work university sponsored events on and/or off campus, participate in collaborative policing efforts with other allied agencies. Respond to campus in the event of emergencies, when requested.

Qualifications:   • BA preferred.Valid CA driver’s license required. Possess a current California POST Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training. Possess a POST Academy Certificate. Must be 21 years old or older and a U.S. citizen. Pass an extensive background investigation and a comprehensive medical and psychological examinations. This position participates in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

• Skill to demonstrate proficiency in the use of a variety of weapons, i.e. mace, baton, handgun, shotgun.

• Knowledge of University regulations preferred.

• Knowledge of Police operating rules and regulations.

• Knowledge of pertinent case law.

• Skills to maintain a professional demeanor under stressful conditions and make decisions under rapidly changing conditions.

• Must possess a high level of common sense.

• Skills to problem solve. Skills to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

• Skills to communicate both orally and in written form, clearly and concisely. Ability to prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports, traffic citations and memoranda.

• Skill to safely handle an automobile in high speed and emergency situations.

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Must possess a strong commitment to professional ethics and integrity.

• Ability and willingness to work in an environment rich in diversity containing a variety of ethnic cultures, religions and lifestyles.

• Skill to demonstrate proficiency in the exercise of defensive tactics.

• Ability to use a personal computer to prepare documents and reports and the ability to use a computer- based mobile data terminal.
