The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. Housing Operations oversees all of the daily maintenance, major maintenance, preventative maintenance, capital project and custodial services for the Student Housing Department. Under the direction of the Assistant Superintended of Physical Plant (SUPERINTENDENT,PHYSL PLT,ASST) the Laborer position is designed to perform both manual and mobile trash removal and recycling; outdoor custodial maintenance; high pressure cleaning of exterior areas; moving of furniture, equipment and supplies; as well as interior custodial duties on a rotating basis including, but not limited to cleaning of public areas in the residence halls and operating motorized cleaning equipment such as buffers and extractors. The successful candidate will operate a motorized vehicle, and attach, transport and remove metal bins in the performance of trash removal duties. The successful candidate is responsible for minor maintenance and storage of equipment; maintains closet inventory of equipment and supplies, will maintain work assignments to campus standards and is responsible for the security of assigned areas. The successful candidate must work effectively in a team environment; receive and follow instructions from supervisor; accomplish work within deadlines; and may need to handle more than one project at a time. The candidate is required to comply with the Facilities Management safety program and due to safety issues, must have the ability to speak and read English; understand and apply UC and departmental policies and procedures; as well as exercise sound judgment in solving problems.

Qualifications:   • Knowledge of the correct application of the proper equipment, tools or material in order to efficiently and safely perform a particular labor task.

• Ability to safely move a variety of items located within the residence halls using proper body mechanics and appropriate tools and equipment.

• Position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Work conditions may involve high noise, dust, moisture, hazardous chemicals, blood and other potentially infectious materials. Work in area where there is constant traffic and in confined spaces.
• Position requires bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling walking, standing, and lifting up to 60 lbs.; ascending and descending stairs/stairwells and working at heights up to 10 feet with a ladder.

• Skill to effectively operate pressure washing equipment that creates high heat and noise.

• Skill to safely operate battery and gas powered trash removal and delivery vehicles.

• Skill to operate a variety of electrical and battery powered floor machines effectively to accomplish projects.

• Knowledge of small engine and equipment troubleshooting, minor maintenance, and repair.

• Ability to learn and practice good safety procedures.

• Strong customer service skills and ability to interact effectively with multi-cultural clients and staff members. Tact and diplomacy skills to communicate effectively with residents and staff. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers, supervisor, students, and other UC staff in a courteous and professional manner.

• Ability to work effectively as part of a team to accomplish work goals.

• Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and policies and procedures. Ability to speak, read and write in standard English. Writing skills to clearly describe the nature of repairs related to building maintenance or equipment problems.
• Demonstrates experience in all aspects of housekeeping/custodian maintenance. Knowledge of correct chemical use and mixture.

• Skill to operate both automatic and standard transmission University vehicles in a safe manner.

• Skill to safely perform basic cleaning tasks.

• Good organizational skills to determine workload priorities and complete work efficiently.

• Flexibility to have assignments changed on a day-to-day basis.

• Ability to understand and work within an environment which supports sustainable operations and practices.

• Will be required to wear UC Merced issued uniform and work weekends.

• Work occasional overtime.

• Non-smoking work environment.
• Alternate Work Schedule in order to meet operational needs.
• Class C Drivers License
• Valid CA driver’s license and satisfactory DMV record required. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment.
• Successful candidate must undergo:
• Complete personal background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
• Employment contingent upon pre-employment physical, including drug/alcohol testing.
