The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. The Pre-Award Proposal Development Administrator can broadly be defined as having a direct working relationship with faculty in their pursuit of research funding. Specifically, the Pre-Award Administrator assists in proposal preparation and is the first-line, go-to person for Principal Investigator's actions related to their research funding. Works on proposals of diverse scope where analysis of data requires thorough understanding of complex regulations. Works on complex proposals that may involve multiple investigators and/or multiple sub-awards. Ability to analyze, interpret and implement University policies and procedures. Excellent communication skills (oral & written), planning, problem-solving, analytical, organizational, project management, and superior customer service skills. Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels. Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting business processes. Advanced personal computer and related software skills, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, database, data query, Internet, and research administration software packages.

Qualifications:   • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training; advanced degree and/or research experience preferred.

• Knowledge Skills Requires independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and superior customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas related to research development and research administration.

• Maintain current knowledge with multiple funding sources and sponsor requirements.

• Requires thorough understanding of research development principles and research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.

• Ability to manage significant volume of transactions and to juggle multiple tasks.

• Thoroughly knowledgeable in applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, et cetera.

• Ability to translate technical/scientific concepts into a fundable proposal.

• Ability to work under pressure and to meet external, hard deadlines.

• Excellent, demonstrable computer skills in Excel, database programs, internet searches and web-based research administration and research funding software.
