The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

Student Health Services (SHS) serves the campus by providing medical services and health education to all University of California, Merced students. Services are designed to enable students to get the most from their educational experience, minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on their academic career. The SHS coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals.

Student Health Services provides a variety of medical services, which are similar to the outpatient care provided in a physicians’ group practice. These services include primary and urgent/acute care, evaluation and guidance for individual health problems, family planning services, public health prevention programs, and health education.

The Medical Records Clerk processes all release of information requests for medical records in accordance with State, Federal, FERPA, HIPAA and SHS guidelines, and assists with the basic day-to-day patient flow functions including scheduling, answering phones, processing charts for appointments and billing.

This is a 12-month position subject to temporary layoff during curtailment periods

Qualifications:   • Associate of Arts degree and five years of related experience are required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Strong customer service orientation. Ability to convey a helpful and positive attitude to the public, campus departments and the various units within Student Affairs in support of the department's customer service environment.

• Working knowledge of State and Federal laws pertaining to the release of medical information.

• Working knowledge of medical terminology.

• Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate in a pleasant, tactful and effective manner when executing tasks and responsibilities.

• Ability to exercise independent and mature judgment and to work with minimal distraction and to take the initiative to follow-up on projects or assignments.

• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality to protect privacy and rights of individuals.

• Proficiency with computers and databases. Excellent computer keyboard skills. Knowledge of Windows XP, Excel, Word.

• Ability to maintain attention to detail to assure completion and accuracy of assignments.

• Ability to handle multiple tasks sometimes with conflicting priorities.
