Description:  

The University of California, Merced is the newest campus of the ten-campus University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With close to 6,200 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

The Principal Research Analyst will provide expert analytical support, using internal and external data from a variety of sources. This position will:

• Design and conduct research studies and program assessments, using appropriate research methodologies and statistics, and making recommendations based on analyses.

• Design and conduct surveys of students, faculty, staff, alumni.

• Help design, review, and maintain predictive models (e.g., enrollment projections; projected demand for academic resources).

• Manage and maintain complex data files.

• Work with technical support to help design and develop an integrated data system (student, personnel, financial, and other data) to support campus decision-making and reporting.

• Prepare reports, tables, and other presentation materials.

• Work closely with various campus units, faculty, administrators, and external constituents, to understand reporting needs and comply with reporting requirements (federal, State, UC System, accrediting bodies, and campus).

Qualifications:   • Master’s degree (PhD preferred for Principal Analyst II level) in social science field, with research methodology and statistics expertise.

• Minimum of two (five for Principal Analyst II level) years of experience as an analyst in social science research setting (preferably higher education, especially institutional research).

• Experience supporting assessments and evaluations (especially in the context of accreditation reviews), using appropriate analytical techniques.

• Excellent analytical and communications skills (written and oral), and organizational skills required.

• Demonstrated knowledge of research methodology, assessment and evaluation methods, advanced statistics (including logistic regression, ANOVA), questionnaire design, and sampling techniques.

• SPSS and/or SAS experience, report writer experience (e.g., Cognos, Crystal Reports, Brio) required. SQL experience preferred.

• Oracle, or other relational database experience preferred.

• Experience using graphics, spreadsheet, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office experience, including PowerPoint and Access, a plus.

• Must be able to work independently and within a team and handle sensitive data professionally.

• Knowledge of federal and State laws regarding privacy of data as well as knowledge of higher education issues desirable.

• Must be able to work on multiple projects concurrently and work within deadlines.
