University of California Merced (UC Merced) campus is the fastest growing public doctoral research university in the nation. UC Merced was conceived both to serve the needs of the rapidly growing Central Valley, one of the world's most productive agricultural regions, and to increase access to the University of California system (UC system) for California's top achievers. Since opening in 2005, UC Merced has grown enrollment to over 7,300 students, including over 500 graduate students, and has an all funds budget of almost $280 million. The campus is expected to grow to accommodate 10,000 students by approximately 2020. UC Merced is the most ethnically diverse campus in the UC system and has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. Sixty percent of the undergraduates are first generation college students. The campus represents an important point of pride for the city of Merced, a city within driving distance of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada, as well as the state capitol in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa Valley, and the Monterey coast.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer and working closely with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the AVC will grow and oversee auxiliary enterprises. The AVC will promote a high level of integration and alignment across the university’s leadership and the auxiliary enterprises to find synergies around common goals while fostering new revenue generation strategies. The AVC will oversee a comprehensive portfolio of existing enterprises that support student life and academic activities with an emphasis on ensuring excellent customer service to students, faculty and staff, and optimizing revenue and operation margin contributions. The AVC will be expected to coordinate budget development, monitor revenue and expense activity, provide dashboard reporting to track and report progress on success metrics, policy development and implementation, business planning, capital investment planning, project management, and process improvement efforts.

The AVC will serve as a leader in a highly matrixed environment, working very closely with business partners in many functional areas within the Divisions of Finance and Administration, Student Affairs, and Physical Operations, Planning and Development. Critical within this matrix structure will be the coordination of business operations with the student programming elements of the auxiliaries, coordinated in Student Affairs. Existing auxiliary enterprises include housing, dining, campus store, parking, transportation, child care development center, Catcard, conference services and retail contracts, among others. The supervised departments employ over 900 full- and part-time employees with annual revenue that exceeds $40 million.


The successful candidate will be an innovative and collaborative financial and planning leader with proven effectiveness in an academic environment or relevant experience in other settings whose intellectual vitality, collegiality, institutional complexity, and proven effectiveness indicate a capacity to serve UC Merced well. The AVC must have a Bachelor’s degree and a record of progressively increasing responsibilities that include at least 7 years of experience with direct accountability for multiple, complex, high volume auxiliary enterprise of similar size and scope. The successful candidate will also bring many, if not all, of the following:
• Deep experience and track record of success in engaging business and industry in partnerships with higher education, including a clear understanding of how these relationships fit the mission of a public university.
• Demonstrated success in financial and planning/development outcomes with a proven record of developing and implementing complex, decentralized, integrated budget proformas and models.
• Knowledge of and experience within a variety of entrepreneurial business models that challenge tradition.
• Proven record of planning and strategy development in support of complex goals and key performance indicators.
• Success as an innovative, transformational leader able to influence organizational optimization.
• Experience in budget management, financial analysis, research, and reporting with multiple business units.
• Experience negotiating and managing multi-million dollar housing, dining, vending, pouring rights, and/or retail contracts.
• Proven success in leading organizational change (systems, process, practices, and structural).
• Impeccable integrity and a reputation for a balanced, consultative approach; a willingness to challenge conventional thinking coupled with the ability to collaborate, listen well, and to take the lead in problem-solving and consensus-building.
• Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills at all levels within the university as well as within the external community.
• Flexibility and collegial style that engenders trust and inspires collaboration, and strong enthusiasm management of efficient operations and excellent customer service.
• Personal integrity, credibility, and commitment to the university’s mission of access.
