The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With more than 5,600 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.
The Controller is the campus Accounting Officer and, in that capacity, has line management and oversight responsibilities for the operations, activities and programs of Financial Services, including General Accounting, Contract and Grant Accounting, Disbursements (including payroll, accounts payable, travel, and entertainment), Student Accounting, Cashiering, Equipment Management, Training, Financial Reporting, and records management. The Campus Controller is responsible for the development and implementation of a campus wide system of internal controls and maintains accountability of the financial resources of the campus. The Controller has the authority to direct campus financial managers to implement University and campus financial policies and procedures. The Controller reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor Business and Financial Services. In addition, the Campus Controller has a dotted line relationship to the Vice Chancellor for Administration at UC Merced and the Vice President of Financial Management at the UC Office of the President.

| Qualifications: |
|
Must have leadership, managerial, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work effectively across the campus with all levels of management, faculty, and staff, with the University of California system wide personnel and with outside agencies. Demonstrated experience in providing accounting and fiscal management in a complex decentralized organization. Demonstrated competence in implementing and managing automated financial systems including those involving electronic commerce. Knowledge of the regulatory, banking, and financial environments in which institutions of higher education operate. Extensive experience in finance, accounting and related areas of law, government policy and regulation; comprehensive knowledge of control conscious financial operations, management accounting and applicable regulations, policies and practices. Experience in leading and motivating professionals in a similar environment. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships within and across organizational units. Ability to lead workgroups and cross-functional teams and to motivate stakeholders, focus on results, and construct action plans with achievable goals and deadlines. Demonstrated experience in establishing strategic planning and developing and monitoring budgets. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and internal control principles and demonstrated skills in applying controls in a similar environment. Leadership skills in all facets of control systems; knowledge of designing, implementing, and evaluating control systems required. Experience using creative financing in the public sector. Excellent written and communication skills to prepare clear and concise correspondence and reports at a level appropriate for the intended audience. Knowledge of University of California policies, procedures, and financial systems preferred. Requires Bachelor and Masters Degrees. Requires licensure as a Certified Public Accountant or equivalent certification CPA, CIA, or CMA required.
