The mission of the Calvin E. Bright Success Center is to provide academic advising and learning support services which empower students to be successful in their academic and personal development. The Bright Success Center aims to provide academic assistance to students through a collaborative effort campus-wide, with the goal of helping students achieve academic success, overcome barriers, reach exciting milestones in their academic work, and develop leadership skills. As such, the mission of the Peer Academic Advising program is to help raise awareness among students about academic requirements, learning support services, campus resources, and important dates and deadlines; the program also provides pre-professional leadership development and advising experience to respected students. The Peer Academic Advisors work closely with professional staff across campus to ensure that students have a successful and fulfilling experience while attending UC Merced.

The role of the Peer Academic Advisor is to provide guidance and support rather than counseling. Peer Academic Advisors assist students with any basic or general inquiry they may have, otherwise refer students to schedule an appointment with the academic advisor. Peer Academic Advisors do not take the place of the professional advisor or other professional support staff.

Peer Academic Advisors responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Attend Peer Advisor training workshops.
• Maintain public office hours for Peer Academic Advising.
• Guide students in accessing the many academic resources available at UC Merced.
• Give peer advice on effective time management, studying and exam preparation.
• Plan, implement, and participate in academic workshops/events
• Provide guidance and support services rather than counseling.
• Regularly communicate significant and critical academic deadlines and opportunities.
• Provide a positive student role model for other students to emulate.
• Assist students in becoming more knowledgeable of academic policies and procedures, support services, university resources, campus organizations, and university activities.
• Remain knowledgeable of University programs, services, policies and procedures.
• Work 10-18 hours per week.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:   • Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
• Good academic and judicial standing
• General knowledge about UC Merced academic policies and procedures
• Plan on studying at UC Merced for at least the next following year
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Must be responsible and reliable
• Must be able to work independently and complete tasks as assigned
• Experiences working as a member of a team
• Proven organization and administrative skills
• Possess excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate and collaborate with diverse groups of people to include students and staff
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• A positive view of UC Merced
•Freshman or Sophomore Standing Preferred
