Description:  

The Calvin E. Bright Success Center is searching for student leaders to be a part of the 2016 New Student Orientation Team. The position of Student Orientation Assistant Coordinator allows students to make a real contribution to UC Merced, to new students, and to the leadership and implementation of the program. Previous experience as an Orientation Leader with high levels of demonstrated leadership, professionalism, maturity, and initiative is required. Assistant Coordinators gain many professional skills as they work directly with staff and faculty on large scale event planning, staff training and supervision of peers. This position is open to experienced Orientation staff only.

Position Description:
40% Administering the details of the program (organizing staff projects, committee, answering the phone, assignments and weekly tasks and seeing that they are completed).
30% Staff selection, training, and supervision of student staff.
20% Planning summer and fall orientation programs.
10% Other duties as assigned (i.e., staff selection outreach through personal appearances in classrooms, organizations, posting fliers).

 
Qualifications:   Requirements:
• Must be enrolled as a UC Merced undergraduate except during summer months, at which time UC Merced summer session attendance may not be possible. Arrangements must be discussed prior to employment. May 2016 graduates may apply.
• Must be in good academic and behavioral standing
• Must have been an Orientation staff member during a previous year at UC Merced.
• Must be available to work 8-18 hours in the spring semester and up to 40 hours in the summer.


Qualifications:
1. high levels of demonstrated leadership, professionalism, maturity and initiative as a orientation leader
2. ability to communicate well, on a personal level, with supervisors, and in public settings
3. ability to respond to and establish rapport with others different from oneself, (new students, parents, fellow staff members)
4. ability to coordinate activities of the student staff as a peer and as a leader: assign tasks, set deadlines, provide constructive feedback, provide leadership, be an effective role model
5. good general knowledge and awareness of UC Merced in and out of the classroom
6. ability to act as an representative of the University and of its educational policies and philosophies at all times
7. demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness
8. ability to work well with other students, to be a positive and constructive member of a group and to facilitate team building
9. ability to work effectively under pressure and follow through on multiple priorities and tasks
10. patience, stamina and positive attitude

Coordinator duties for the summer will include:
• Training of student staff involved in the session components
• Coordinating staffing and event details (i.e. set-up, clean-up, logistics)
• Moderator/facilitator of student sessions
• Supervising student staff
• Development and management of first year experience initiatives


General comments:
In comparison to a Orientation Leader, this position carries a greater amount of responsibility and independence, and requires continued dedication in terms of time, energy, self-discipline, teamwork and positive attitude.
