Description:  

The Calvin E. Bright Success Center provides a wide array of student services to promote academic success. Recent efforts include emphasis on the needs of special populations on campus including low-income, first-generation, former Foster Youth, and undeclared students. This opportunity is related to the newest addition, Degree Attainment for Returning and Transfer Scholars (DARTS), a program just for transfer and reinstated undergraduates.

-Hospitality Duty (greet and engage in conversation with DARTS Scholars who visit the space; provide guidance on campus resources as needed; refer students to appropriate resources or services).
-Office support; survey tallying when needed; assistance with planning and carrying out of Retreat; in teams of two or three; Fellows are assigned to managing lending library, producing newsletter, moderating Facebook group, editing online calendar of events and workshops, and other online resources.
-Serve as Peer Instructor for USTU 010 (lead small group discussion or activity for second half of each 50-minute weekly session; participate in weekly planning meetings not to exceed one hour per week). This duty is not a part of all Fellows' responsibilities, but will be asked of some of them.
-Training (intermittently throughout the year, with the Bright Success Center Peer Mentors and Orientation Leaders); monthly meetings with Coordinator for mutual feedback and sharing of observations and program needs.
-This position is intended for ambitious students who care about UC Merced and their peers, and who want to make a positive difference.
-Employment is estimated to range 8-15 hours per week.

 
Qualifications:   • Junior standing or higher and Good Academic Standing at the time of hiring;
• Experience in formal on-campus programs such as clubs, leadership trainings, and other out-of-class activities;
• Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs of at-risk or underrepresented students on campus; Maintain confidentiality;
• Ability to learn new skills, maintain confidentiality, adapt to changing demands on the job, work in a team, think creatively and carry new ideas through to implementation;
• Professional comportment, in compliance with UC Merced student conduct policies, and serve as role model to less experienced peers;
• Background as a transfer or reinstated student, or a history of having overcome academic obstacles highly desirable.
