The incumbent will be responsible for architecting, implementing and administering Engineering servers, provide a highly technical professional service to the Dean's office through the application of expertise in Information Systems design, development and implementation of data base driven websites preferably using Open Source technologies and support of instructional Linux/Windows labs. The incumbent will be the main liaison with central IT to support instructional laboratory needs.

The Computer Lab Manager & Systems Administrator uses skills as a seasoned, experienced applications programming professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.


• Defines specs, installs, configures, and administers new and existing instructional and research servers. Perform maintenance as needed, to include software and/or hardware upgrades. Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards.

o Develops conversion and system implementation plans. Assist with management, debugging and issue resolution on virtual environment.

o Develops documentation and tools to improve server infrastructure.

o Works closely with other school and campus staff to provide backups for critical instructional and research servers.

• Responsible for support and maintenance of the Linux instructional labs and serves as a liaison with central IT for Windows instructional labs. It includes but not limited to:

o On-site and remote technical support for end-users.
o Support and maintenance of lab hardware. Coordinate and assist with image development to support software needs for instructional usage.
o Works closely with the School's instructional support office to provide instructional software needs.
o Responsible for maintaining instructional software licenses.
o Trains Teaching Assistants and faculty on the use of Linux labs.
o Responds to user questions/needs related with the use of instructional desktops and servers.

• Independently analyzes complex information requirements and documents to formulate logic for new information systems, devises logic procedures, prepares flow-charting, performs coding, data analysis, and tests/debugs programs through the application of professional programming concepts. Interacts with and assesses the needs of users during the design and implementation of information systems. Provides analysis for the design and use of complex relational databases, data security, robustness, performance and scalability. Explores new frameworks and tools to improve infrastructure, utilize new web technology to improve end-user experience and documenting the development of websites and information systems.

• Responsible for support and maintenance of Windows servers within the School of Engineering. These activities include:
o Active Directory management.
o Support for network license management and remote applications.
o Coordination with IT regarding Windows needs within School of Engineering Labs


Qualifications:   • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and three years of progressively responsible experience in Databases and Programming and/or equivalent experience/training.

• Thorough knowledge of Linux and applications programming function. (Desirable: PERL, PYTHON).

• Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.

• Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development.

• Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.

• Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.

• Demonstrated experience Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.

• Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.

• Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks.

• Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.

• Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.

• Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems,system users and dependent/related functions.


• Master degree in Computer Science and/or equivalent experience/training.
