Description:

UC Merced is also building the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building in the heart of Merced.

UC Merced Center for Educational Partnerships through the Talent Search Program is partnering with local schools to implement a series of academic enrichment activities focusing on language arts, mathematics, foreign language, history and science. These activities will take place during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Talent Search Project Director, the Talent Search learning assistants will serve as leaders, advisors, educators, and role models to incoming 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade Talent Search participants who attend after school tutoring. Under the direct supervision of the Talent Search Program Director, learning assistants will participate in all aspects of the Talent Search Program academic enrichment activities.
Learning Assistants will be responsible for:

• Providing academic advising to students individually or in small groups

• Determining from student notes and discussions the concepts that need to be reviewed

• Guiding student math, English, science, foreign language, history and social cultural studies workshop sessions

• Assisting in developing a resource file for academic enrichment sessions

• Working with low-income, underrepresented students, to provide the interventions necessary to reach this population through culturally appropriate strategies and approaches

• Monitoring student behavior and writing and submitting incident reports of any violations of the Talent Search student contract agreement

• Maintaining daily/weekly records of all student contacts and submitting reports as requested by supervisor

• Facilitating small/large group activities; (leadership, cultural, and social) as deemed necessary; and Demonstrating cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.

 
Qualifications:   • In the process of attaining a Bachelor’s Degree.

• Demonstrate experience working with low-income, underrepresented students, and providing the interventions necessary to reach this community through culturally appropriate strategies and approaches.

• Written and verbal communication.

• Excellent presentation skills.

• Ability to utilize computerized applications for word processing and spreadsheets, as well as electronic mail, specific applications include Word, Excel, and Outlook; and internet.

• Ability to manage workload, both independently and as part of a team and deal with stressful situations.

Special Conditions of Employment.

• Must have a flexible schedule for afternoon and evening meetings/activities.

• Must submit to a background check and fingerprinting.
