Description:  

The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With close to 6,200 students, UC Merced has planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving, requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

The Database Administrator uses advanced database administration concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex problems of diverse scope where incumbent must assess business needs and technical considerations with minimal direction in order to complete database projects of advanced scope and complexity. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Implements database solutions from evaluation to implementation of large enterprise level hardware and software applications.

Applies advanced concepts in working on highly complex projects including all aspects of enterprise class database administration, including the management of structured database information and the management of repositories of unstructured content such as documents and images.

Resolves procedural and technical issues in the context of department policies and procedures. Works on database-related issues and projects of diverse scope taking in business practice and technical considerations, applying defined IT procedures and practices to database projects. Interacts with both members internal and external to their unit. Works on moderately sized databases with numerous tables and end users using intermediate level database design and programming techniques such as views, triggers, stored procedures. Implements performance tuning techniques including indexes and advanced SQL syntax. Establishes and maintains security and integrity controls. Monitors policies, procedures and standards relating to database management. Proposes and implements enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system. Applies database administration concepts to perform complex analysis and provides analysis for complex project, issues, concerns, et cetera.

Provides knowledge, skills, and experience providing database administration support for Oracle, MS SQL Server and MySQL RDBMS on workstations and servers both centrally and within campus departments as needed. Functions include installation, upgrade, maintenance and support of various Oracle, MS SQL and MySQL relational databases and other related (RMAN, Net8, thick and thin clients, etc.). This also involves configuring single and multi-threaded servers, enabling referential integrity, implementing auditing, if appropriate, ensuring data integrity and monitoring database activity. Provides knowledge, skills and experience with complex methodologies, algorithms and strategies for establishing and tuning of databases to optimize the effectiveness of all Oracle, MS SQL and MySQL products and database transactions on a particular server or client. Other responsibilities include database space utilization, database de-fragmentation and object rebuilding, bug fix diagnosis and reporting, auditing, account management, backup and recovery, security management and operational support. Resolve database problems by installing appropriate patches and documenting both the problems and the patches in a regular and organized manner. Troubleshoot and resolve all database related issues working with other staff and/or vendors. Also, maintain procedures, standards and documentation for effective database software utilization. Provide on-call support during business and non-business hours.

Qualifications:   • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
• Requires advanced knowledge of database management systems and standards. Requires knowledge of conceptual database design, capacity planning and interface specifications. Has knowledge of test application code in client server environment. Has broad knowledge of the IT environment. Has organizational and analytical skills; knowledge, skill and experience with Oracle, MS SQL and MySQL RDBMS and related software products are required.
• Minimum 7 years of experience with Oracle, MS SQL and MySQL architecture, databases, including tables, indexes, referential integrity constraints, stored packages, procedures and functions, database links and snapshots. Experience in tuning to Oracle optimizers. Experience in performing statistics gathering and analysis. Demonstrated experience in major database migrations (e.g. migrating from Oracle to MS SQL, MS SQL -> MySQL, etc).
• Knowledge and experience of intermediate UNIX and Linux OS administration (Solaris 10-11, Linux (RHEL)). Familiarity with administration and maintenance of virtualized environments (VMWare, Solaris LDOMs and zones). Familiarity with cloud solutions and integration. Good understanding of virtualization and clouds.
• Has skills necessary to develop procedures and standards relating to database management systems.
• Has skills associated with implementing database enhancements that improve performance and reliability of the system at the software, hardware, and operating system level.
• Technical skill to develop, implement and test disaster recovery functions using backup technologies.
• Demonstrated experience and effective use of SQL*Plus, PL/SQL, Net8, SQL*Loader, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Recovery Manager (RMAN), and other administration tools.
• Demonstrated experience in architecting and implementing backup solutions for various RDBMS systems (for archiving, DR, logical and physical failure recovery purposes).
• Strong security skills for protecting the operating system, software, data, and hardware.
• Knowledge and experience of intermediate UNIX and Linux OS administration (Solaris 10-11, Linux (RHEL)). Familiarity with administration and maintenance of virtualized environments (VMWare, Solaris LDOMs and zones). Familiarity with cloud solutions and integration.
• Must be able to work independently on complex technical projects as well as on a team of technical professionals and departmental decision-makers either giving or receiving directions or sharing knowledge from another member of staff.
• Demonstrated effectiveness and success working in a project focused environment. This includes a solid background working on and/or developing projects of various sizes, and experience delivering objectives on time, within budget, and with a high degree of quality.
• Has experience in an environment that utilizes intuition, problem diagnosis, and proactive problem solving skills. Has experience in conducting research.
