The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. UC Merced was conceived both to serve the needs of the rapidly growing Central Valley, one of the world’s most productive agricultural regions, and to increase access to the University of California system (UC System) for California’s top students. The Construction Inspector is a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

The construction inspector uses advanced inspection skills and concepts with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures to perform highly complex plan reviews and inspections of Project 2020 construction projects by the Development Team, for code compliance; and participates in final inspection and final acceptance procedures. Exercises good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and ensuring compliance with all applicable building codes, rules, regulations, laws, etc.


Qualifications:   • Bachelors degree in related area. Equivalent experience and education considered.

• Current ICC California Certified Combination Building Inspector or equivalent (DSA or OSHPD).

• ICC California Certified Building Plans Examiner or equivalent.

• CASP Certification (Preferred).

• LEED Certification (Preferred).

• Advanced knowledge of California Building Codes, Cal OSHA, and the Campus Construction Design Standards.

• Advanced knowledge/skills in providing plan review services on simple and complex improvement projects as well as code applications for replacement, repairs and upgrades of campus facilities.

• Advanced organizational and analytical skills, including skill in problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.

• Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its infrastructure and applicable rules, regulations, policies and practices.

• Advanced verbal and interpersonal communications skills including skill to work effectively with a variety of constituents
