In Fall 2016, UC Merced broke ground on a $1.3 billion public-private partnership that is unprecedented in higher education. The Merced 2020 Project will nearly double the physical capacity of the campus by 2020, enhancing academic distinction, student success and research excellence. In 2018, UC Merced opened the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building located in the heart of Merced.

The Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines (CCBM) at UC Merced is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) program. CCBM’s vision is to be nationally and internationally recognized for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research on functional multi-scale biomolecular and cellular assemblies and to be a model for integrated research, education and outreach. Through focused efforts to encourage participation among underrepresented students from California’s San Joaquin Valley and beyond, CCBM will develop a pipeline for a highly qualified science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce and produce high-caliber, diverse trainees at all levels who can spur growth in the region. CCBM brings together more than a dozen faculty members from multiple units across campus including bioengineering, physics, chemistry and chemical biology, materials science and engineering and is led by faculty co-Directors Victor Muñoz and Ajay Gopinathan. The Center is acquiring new research instrumentation and computational resources and recruiting new personnel, including administrative staff and project scientists, to fulfill CCBM’s research and training mission.

The Executive Director serves as a central administrator and public representative for the Center. The Executive Director will coordinate the research, educational and outreach activities of the Center. The Executive Director reports to the faculty co-Directors and works with the Program Manager and all the investigators in the Center to implement the Center activities with the goal of fulfilling the Center’s mission. The Executive Director will help to keep the Center progress on track and also help implement realignment of strategic plans or scientific efforts as decided by the co-Directors. The Executive Director will coordinate with other institutions and stake holders that are part of the Center, other administrative and academic units at UCM as well as the local community. The Executive Director will coordinate and supervise grant administration, set expenditure plans, monitor expenditure, participate in strategic planning, compile and edit reports as well as organize and coordinate executive meetings, community events, assessment and evaluation activities, fund raising and publicity.

The initial appointment will be for two years with options for renewal including extension beyond the five years of the funded project, subject to satisfactory performance. Salary will be competitive, including benefits. Qualifications:   Required:
• Graduate degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. A degree in engineering or science is a plus.

• 1 year experience in dealing with research related-administrative matters.

• Proven team building skills and organizational, and problem-solving skills. Highly developed ability to prepare written communications.

• Academic background and experience in scientific research preferred. At least three years of experience with a research institute, academic institution, national laboratory, or commercial organization working within a scientific research setting, preferably funded by federal agencies.

• Strong oral and written communication skills. Highly developed ability to prepare written communications.

• Competence in large event planning, and coordination and facilitation of substantive research through administrative means.

• Experience in coordinating projects.

• Ability to maintain focus and work with a team to meet deadlines. Ability to anticipate and initiate action to promote efficient completion of tasks.


• Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.

• Solid fundraising experience.

• Experience in dealing with research related-administrative matters.

• Familiarity with STEM field research.
