The University of California, Merced is the tenth campus of the UC system and the first American research university built in the 21st century.

In collaboration with Housing and Residence Life, the Fiat Lux Living Learning Community provides Scholars the opportunity to live together on-campus. The Fiat Lux Community Scholar responsibilities include:

• Reside in the Fiat Lux Living Learning Community for the 2017-2018 academic year
• Serve in a Peer-Mentor capacity for first-year Scholars participating in the Living Learning Community
• Empower students to make a successful academic and social transition to UC Merced from high school
• Collaborate with Resident Assistants to create a safe and inclusive learning community
• Collaborate with Academic Scholars, Lead Scholars and Student Coordinators to host and plan events
• Plan and Facilitate Fiat Lux study sessions/study groups in the Fiat Lux Living Learning Community
• Accurately report and maintain student’s study session time /attendance
• Facilitate small study groups to specific courses on the floors of the residence halls
• Enforce Study Session Policies
•Advise students on academic, personal/social, career and financial concerns in an individual and group basis.
• Develop social and academic programs that reflect and serve the students’ needs and interests
• Facilitate workshops on topics that will assist students transition and help develop academic, personal well being and social skills.
• Knowledge of campus and community resources
• Hold office hours, and engage students to build relationships and encourage program participation to meet semester requirements
• Maintain good conduct on and off campus, and comply with all UC Merced Principles of Community and Conduct Standards
• Maintain on-line community and announcements for the Fiat Lux Scholars Program
• Serve as a liaison between Fiat Lux Scholars, Housing and Residence Life, and the Fiat Lux Scholars Program Staff
• Advocate for the interest of Fiat Lux Scholars to the greater UC Merced Community
• Ability to use iCatCard Web Services (Recommended)
• Other duties assigned

Qualifications:   • Sophomore, Junior or third-year standing, Senior or fourth year Standing
• Cumulative and/or Semester GPA of at least 2.75
• Good student conduct standing with the University
• Knowledge and understanding of the needs of diverse students including first-generation students
• Ability to work independently and exercise independent and sound judgment
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
• Ability to collaborate and work as member of a team
• Effective interpersonal communication skills, including active listening skills
• Ability to use office equipment such as a laptop computer, printer/scanner/copier, projector and fax
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, Word, and Power Point
• Ability to use Mac/PC operating systems
• Must be able to multi-task and have the ability to work in a fast paced environment
• Must be available to attend Required Training: August 7th-18th, 2017 from 8:00am to 5:00pm
• Must be available to attend two weekly meetings during the 2017-2018 academic year (TBD)
