Description:  

The Calvin E. Bright Success Center (BSC) is dedicated to providing learning support services which empower students to be successful in their academic and personal development. The BSC aims to provide academic assistance to students through a collaborative effort campus-wide, with the goal of helping students achieve academic success, overcome barriers, reach exciting milestones in their academic work, and develop leadership skills.

Success Mentors empower first-year students to succeed academically, personally, & socially through community building, establishing connections with campus and community resources, and supporting first-year students as they transition to life as a Bobcat. Mentors will be matched with and meet individually with 4-10 mentees each semester. In order to ensure programmatic success, Success Mentors are required to participate in ongoing training and development opportunities. Additionally, Success Mentors are expected to participate in committees and collaborate with fellow mentors as necessary.

The Success Mentor position is a three-semester position that begins with training and shadowing in the Spring 2017 semester and continues through the 2017-2018 academic year. Candidates who successfully complete Spring 2017 training may be eligible for recruitment to work as a Success Mentor in support of Summer Bridge through the Summer Session B (June 19 – August 11).

Spring 2017
- Participate in Success Mentor Training
- Spring, 2017 – March 4 & 18, April 8 & 15 (9am-2pm – time subject to change)
- Shadow a current mentor during one mentee meeting
- Develop and provide resources or events for first-year students in collaboration with the 2016-2017 SMP staff

2017-2018
- Participate in Success Mentor Training
- 2017 – 2018 Academic Year – August 14-18, 21, & 22; January 11-12, 2018
- Meet individually with assigned mentees (an average of 30 minutes a week)
- Empower first-year students to make a successful academic and social transition to UC Merced
- Work with mentees to define and establish academic and personal goals
- Connect mentees with campus and community resources
- Serve as a liaison between the Bright Success Center, the University, and mentees
- Develop and implement “meet-up” events with mentees in collaboration with other mentors
- Work collaboratively to offer various resources and services for first-year students
- Work collaboratively on one of four committees (Communication, Events, Social Media, & Workshops)
- Exemplify the values of the University of California, including UC Merced’s Principles of community
- Attend weekly meetings and trainings throughout the 2017-2018 academic year (Friday’s 1:30-3:30pm)
- Represent the Success Mentor Program and support the Bright Success Center as necessary
- Other duties as assigned

 
Qualifications:   • In good judicial and academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 by January 31, 2017)
• Knowledgeable about campus resources and how to access them
• Able to work with and support a diverse body of students
• Excellent communication skills, including active listening skills
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Able to work independently and exercise sound judgment
• Familiarity and sensitivity to transition issues faced by first-year students, particularly commuter students
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Must be available to participate in trainings
o Spring, 2017 – March 4 & 18, April 8, 15, 29
o 2017 – 2018 Academic Year – August 14-18, 21, & 22; January 11-12, 2018
• Must be available to attend weekly meetings and trainings throughout the 17-18 academic year (Friday's 1:30-3:30pm)
• Experience with the Success Mentor Program as a mentee or mentor preferred but not required
• Level 1 Bobcat Leadership Series certification preferred
