The Calvin E. Bright Success Center aims to provide academic assistance to students through a collaborative effort campus-wide, with the goal of helping students achieve academic success, overcome barriers, reach exciting milestones in their academic work and develop leadership skills. The role of the Peer Academic Advisor (PAA) is to provide academic and personal guidance and support (rather than counseling) to Undeclared students. Peer Academic Advisors assist students with any basic or general inquiries and referring students to appropriate resources. PAAs do not take the place of the professional advisor or other professional support staff.

This position involves the following responsibilities:
• Promote inclusion of students with diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to gender, ability, ethinicity, LGBTQ+ communities, religion)
• Attend mandatory training before the start of each semester in August and January, and attend weekly staff meetings during the semester
• Maintain the PAA table during office hours, involving the set-up/take-down of advising supplies and ensuring security of devices
• Demonstrate expertise in the following areas: UCM Catalog, degree requirements for all majors/minors, academic policies/procedures, University support services/departments/resources, and campus activities
• Remain knowledgeable of changes in University websites, programs, services, policies and procedures
• Demonstrate efficiency when working independently, communicating frequently with your supervisor
• Teach students to use MyDegreePath, gpa calculators, course registration and other academic tools
• Assist students in becoming more knowledgeable of their degree requirements, academic policies/procedures, and campus resources
• Advise about various academic strategies and study skills, such as time management, exam preparation, and methods of studying
• Plan, implement, and participate in academic workshops, events, and marketing campaigns
• Regularly communicate critical academic deadlines and opportunities to students
• Provide a positive student role model for other students to emulate
• Practice confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Acts (FERPA)
• Work 10-18 hours per week and regularly communicate your needs with the Lead PAA and your supervisor
• Other duties as assigned

• 2.5 GPA or higher and in good academic and judicial standing
• Basic knowledge about UC Merced degree offerings and academic policies/procedures
• Plans to study on campus at UC Merced for the next academic year (e.g. no plans to study abroad in the next year)
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and able to effectively engage in collaboration with diverse students and staff
• Responsible, reliable, and able to work independently and complete tasks as assigned
• Experience working as a member of a team and contributing to a team effort
• Proven organizational and administrative skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Holds positive opinion of UC Merced
