The Office of International Affairs advances global engagement of UC Merced and its academic community. It accomplishes this primarily through its Study Abroad (SA) and International Student & Scholars (ISS) service units. These units assist UC Merced students interested in educational experiences abroad and international students and scholars who come to UC Merced to study, conduct research and teach.

The Peer Advisor's primary duty is to staff the front desk of the International Office and to assist guests in obtaining information related to the Study Abroad and International Student & Scholar units. Peer Advisors assist with outreach, recruitment, orientations and a variety of clerical tasks and projects.

Peer Advisors must be available to work for the entire academic year. They will work 10-18 hours which may include some evening and weekend hours. Attendance at some OIA events and informational meetings is mandatory.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

* Welcoming clients to the International Office and providing information about routine questions and processes;
* Providing general and specific information about OIA activities to students, staff, faculty, parents, and campus visitors during tabling and other outreach opportunities;
* Pre-advising students about Study Abroad countries and programs;
* Promoting OIA activities during classroom, housing, and club presentations;
* Helping students with the Study Abroad application and pre-departure process;
* Representing OIA during International Students and Scholars (ISS) orientations and other various campus events (including: Preview Day, Family Weekend, International Education Week);
* Designing promotional materials including posters and flyers;
* Organizing and updating display cases brochure racks, bulletin boards, and libraries;
* Receiving, reviewing and organizing client materials;
* Promoting study abroad and providing general student outreach by encouraging students to participate in informational meetings, interviews and orientation programs.

Qualifications:   Peer Advisors work with students, staff, faculty and parents; they must represent the office in a professional manner. Peer Advisors must display a mature and courteous attitude and strictly adhere to student confidentiality protocols and laws.

Successful applicants will have knowledge of and interest in furthering the aims of the Office of International Affairs (OIA). Self-starters will excel in this position - especially those who demonstrate an ability to identify and implement smart practices and solutions to daily operations. Peer advisors need to be creative, reliable and have strong attention to detail.

Successful applicants will also be comfortable speaking to large and small groups and facilitating discussions about International Affairs.

Applicants must have MS Office skills and those with Mac computer experience are highly desirable.
