Description:  

UC Merced Residence Education is charged with providing a comfortable, convenient, and engaging residential experience for students living on-campus. Under the supervision of the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC), the Afro Hall Lead Scholar supports this mission by facilitating various programming aspects of student life for the Afro Hall Living Learning Community. The incumbent plays an important leadership role in developing an inclusive and interactive community, serving as a mentor, and role model. The Afro Hall Lead Scholar works cooperatively with the Residence Life Coordinator and Resident Assistant to create programs that enrich the resident experience. Specifically, the Afro Hall Lead Scholar will complete the following duties:
• During the 2019-20 academic year organize three socials and three educational workshops for the scholars to build community networks and promote academic success
• Serve as a liaison between Residence Education and the Africans for Retention and Outreach (AFRO) president and vice president
• Between weeks 2 and 14 of the semester, organize and host 2-hour weekly study sessions for Afro Hall scholars
• As needed, refer students to campus resources such as financial aid, academic advising, student employment, etc.
• By March 1, 2020, work with the RA to ensure all Afro Hall scholars declare a major and academic plan to graduate in 4-years
• Work with the RA to implement strategies to ensure all Afro Hall scholars maintain a 2.75 GPA for the semester
• By April 30, 2019, collaborate with others to coordinate the end of year celebration Afro Hall scholars

Residence Education Employment Expectations for the Afro Hall Lead Scholar Position
1. Collaborate with Resident Assistants to plan and implement both large and small-scale programs or activities for residents that align with the Afro Hall mission.
2. Work collaboratively with campus departments/offices to provide resources to students.
3. Understand the event planning process from planning, implementing and evaluating.
4. Accurately maintain a record of attendees at programs and study sessions.
5. Meet with the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) supervisor weekly and attend staff meetings when necessary.
6. Attend all mandatory scheduled meetings, trainings, and in-services as scheduled.
7. Accurately complete and submit all forms and reports by established deadlines. Examples include, but are not limited to, weekly reports and programming paperwork.
8. Adhere to programming budgets and follow UC and department purchasing guidelines.
9. Adhere to FERPA and CLERY reporting mandates to maintain confidentiality surrounding student records.
10. Serve on departmental and/or campus committees as needed.
11. Assist with move-in and move-out including fall opening and closing, breaks, and spring opening and closing.
12. Get to know residents, be approachable, and make yourself available at least 4-hours per week.
13. Strive to create safe and inclusive learning communities that practice the UC Merced “Principles of Community” and enhance students’ University experience.
14. Maintain a positive, open-minded and approachable attitude.
15. Abide by all Housing & Residence Life and University policies and procedures.
16. Maintain open communication with the Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) regarding student issues and concerns.

 
Qualifications:   PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
a. Completion of Tier One Bobcat Leader certification offered by the Margo F. Souza Student Leadership Center.
MINIMAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
a. Must be a full-time UCM student and possess and maintain a minimal cumulative and semester GPA of 2.75 and serve as an academic role model. By applying, you authorize the Residence Education staff to access and view yourGPA.
b. Must be in good financial and judicial standing with the University.
c. Must have a second year standing
d. Possess excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate and collaborate with diverse groups of people to include student, parent, faculty, staff and administrative leadership.
e. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
f. Successful leadership experiences working with clubs and organizations at a college level preferred but high school and community experience will be considered.
g. To maintain open lines of communication with supervisor and other staff as appropriate.
h. Awareness of and sensitivity to student needs, particularly first-year populations.
i. Ability to conceptualize, design and implement student and campus programs and activities.
j. To abide by all policies and procedures of UC Merced and always serve as a positive role model .
k. Ability to manage workload, both independently and as part of a team.
l. Initiative and ability to administer and manage multiple priorities, set realistic goals and objectives, organize resources and schedule efforts to achieve goals.
m. Must be willing to work nights and weekends, alter work schedules as needed, and successfully pass a backgroundcheck.
m. Working knowledge of desktop publishing and PC computers or be willing to learn.
n. Ability to create appealing publicity for programs, events, and services.
o. Proven experience working in collaboration as a part of a team.
p. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and effectively manages time.
q. Must be consistently available at least two evenings per week and two weekends each month.
r. Must live on campus in Cathedral 3rd floor for the full 2019-20 academic year.
